Illustrative quotations

The Oxford English Dictionary aimed to give approximately one quotation per century; DARE, which must illustrate the geographical and social dimensions as well as the chronological, is much more generous. We give the earliest quotation available, a quotation as recent as possible, any that give important evidence for social or semantic context, at least one for every variant form or spelling, and enough other quotations to give a representative picture of the geographical spread. All quotations are checked against the original sources if possible; on the rare occasions when we take quotes directly from secondary sources, that source is always indicated.
